ANZCOR has released the updated Guideline 12.4 – Paediatric Resuscitation in Special Circumstances, introducing several important additions to paediatric advanced life support practice.
Key updates in this release include:
• New guidance for children in cardiac arrest due to hypovolaemia
• Expanded management recommendations for electrolyte and metabolic disorders
• New guidance relating to paediatric pulmonary embolism
• New recommendations for management of children supported with LVADs
• Updated ILCOR Good Practice Statement regarding consideration of ECMO in selected children with pulmonary hypertensive crisis, low cardiac output, or right ventricular failure
The guideline also reinforces the importance of early identification and treatment of reversible causes of paediatric cardiac arrest, including the “4 Hs and 4 Ts”, alongside evolving approaches involving extracorporeal life support (ECMO/ECLS).
These updates reflect the continuing evolution of paediatric resuscitation practice and the increasing role of advanced circulatory support in specialist settings.
